The Pastor, Superintendent, Husband and Father
David J. Porter, Sr. is the Pastor of Kirkland Memorial 2nd Church of God in Christ (The Praise Zone), one of the fastest growing Church of God In Christ ministries in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. To accommodate the blessings of an increasing number of disciples in ministry, we have added an additional weekend worship service. A new larger worship center and increased parking on the expanding campus of the church has been commissioned by the membership assembly for construction over the next few years to more than triple the capacity of each weekend worship service as we fulfill the vision of Praising God, Embracing People and Changing Lives. Execution of multi-site affiliated locations will be developed as the second phase of our fulfillment of the Great Commission under Pastor Porter's leadership, culminating with a new 3,000 - 4,000 seat worship center as phase three.
In 2010, Pastor Porter was appointed the Superintendent of the Great Commission District of local churches by Bishop Neavelle A. Coles. In this role he supports the local churches of the district of local churches with leadership, wisdom and financial support. He began with the launch of "Fellowship Fridays" a novel approach to support each local church and pastor in his appointed district spiritually in fellowship and financially. Under his short tenure of leadership as the Superintendent of the Great Commission district, he has assured financial support approaching $100,000.00 to the local churches of the district to help expand ministry, and growth of the local ministries.
Superintendent Porter and his wife, Missionary Nicole Porter, are the parents of three children - LaMar, David and Diamond. When not working in ministry, Pastor Porter spends quality time with his family, and continues his passion of writing and producing Christian and Gospel music. Pastor Porter is a Washington, D.C. native, and has attended and been an active lifelong member of the Kirkland Memorial 2nd COGIC (the Praise Zone) ministry beginning in Washington, D.C. when the membership totaled 55 members. When he was appointed the Pastor of the Praise Zone in 2007, we began with 75 members. Porter's ministry has been blessed and the Praise Zone continues to grow steadily as a result of his execution of multliple initiatives, including but not limited to monthly sermon series, small groups, a transparent ministry, one hour worship services, weekly Bible Study Lessons linked to monthly sermon series, and offering four weekend worship services.
A Relevant Vision for the 21st Century
Pastor Porter's success in ministering to God's people can be traced to the vision and vision statement given to him by God summed up as follows: "Praising God, Embracing People and Changing Lives". He believes God's business is the most important business to be executed, therefore he executes the Great Commission with a passion. Winning souls for Christ and training them to be disciples is his passion.
In preparation for continuing growth of the ministry and the associated beneficial tasks that will be executed for the good of the people of God and our surrounding communities, Pastor Porter implemented a strategic plan to enhance and expand the worship facilities for the membership and the surrounding community at large. He began by updating the stage area, adding a studio to record the sermons, adding a state the art sound system and flat panel monitors in the sanctuary with state of art remote cameras, increasing the ministry parking capacity by over 40%, installed technology for enhanced accountability for any and all finances of the ministry, enhanced all security alarm and security video systems. To further accommodate the growth of the ministry and forthcoming needs of the people, he tasked his ministry executive management team to begin acquiring land surrounding the church property. The acquisitions to date have increased the acreage owned by the ministry to a total of over 5.5 acres. Pastor Porter has lead these strategic acquisitions of more than a quarter of a million in real estate surrounding the original campus site without indebting the ministry. In 2012, he directed his executive management team to begin exploring expanding the current worship center because of the growing membership, and limited seating. Based upon feasibility studies, the membership assembly under Pastor Porter's leadership agreed the time had come to pursue the construction of a new sanctuary. The new worship center that will eventually seat over 2,100 people per weekend, will be constructed on the south east end of the current expanded campus. January 2015, the Preliminary Plan of Subdivision, the Traffic Impact Analysis among other site development documentation were submitted to Prince George's County for approval to construct the new worship center, and was approved unanimously by the Prince George's Planning Board during the month of March 2015. Formal documentation for moving forward from the board arrived during the month of June 2015. With bank approval for moving forward, we moved to the next phase in earnest. As of March 2016, the architectural and site engineering construction documents are 50% complete with a construction project plan to pull permits during the summer of 2016.
To accommodate the growing number of disciples for Christ attending weekend services, Pastor Porter in early 2014 launched an additional Sunday morning worship service at 8AM. There are now three Sunday worship services, that includes two - 1 hour worship experiences in the morning, 8:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. The ministry also offers a one (1) hour Friday evening and Sunday evening traditional worship experiences including testimony service. These services begin promptly at 7:00 p.m and 6:00 p.m. respectively. The numerous 9:30 a.m. Sunday Bible Study class sessions for Men, Women, Teens, Tweens, and Tots have grown three fold, and are set to grow more over the next several months. The monthly series based Bible Study Lessons and sessions are linked to the weekly sermons, are Bible based, 21st century relevant and both INFORMATIVE and EXHILARATING!!
Pastor Porter is recognized as an outstanding orator, leader and pastor of this generation and the next generations. His messages are Bible based, relevant and embraces the Lord's word, when Jesus says "But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth." Acts 1:8
The above words of Jesus outline Pastor Porter's desire for every Praise Zone member, future member, and guest to experience the walk with Jesus Christ, as His witness in our local and expanded communities of Maryland, Washington, D.C. and Virginia.
Pastor Porter, has established the primary corner post of a multi-phase Praise Zone ministry mission. This primary and cornerpost mission is outreach to the Washington D.C. Metropolitan area including Maryland, D.C. and Virginia, to transform as many men, women, and young people as possible into passionate and productive Christians that are true followers of Jesus Christ. He has developed a plan of execution that includes his leading the people of the Praise Zone in reaching up to God in PRAISE AND WORSHIP, while reaching out to family, friends and colleagues on the job, and all neighbors in the surrounding communities in Maryland, Virginia and Washington D.C.
