II Peter 3:18
"But Grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ..."
There is an innate desire to always progress. This is the status quo of mankind. Since the fall of man, we have been driven with the passion to return to our original state of creation - the perfect image of God. Not all of humankind may understand this quest, however it is our instinctive mission yet the same. This is why we are constantly pushing to get ahead, pushing to do better, pushing to be better. For those who do not push to get ahead, to do better, or to be better, it is not because they feel that they should not. It's really because they feel that they can't, although they believe they should. I contend that there is the deep belief within every person, that things are supposed to be better.
The enemy perverts this God-given drive into greed, lust or covetousness. This is evident in those who want more than their fair share, those who want to mirror what everyone else has or is doing, or those who blatantly want what belongs to someone else. The fear of crossing these lines cause many to retreat and become content with where they are. But I contend that if we live up to the standards and achieve the goals that God has set for us, we will spend an entire life time pressing for better, pressing for more, pressing toward the mark! One thing is for sure, God's desire for us all is quite clear - we must grow.
At some point and time in our lives, we committed a heart-felt, sincere proclamation of "yes" to The Lord. This "yes" meant that whatever God wanted us to do, wherever He wanted us to go, whatever He wanted us to say - we were ready and willing to do it. This commitment to God, coupled with His will for us to grow, should have us striving to be better today than we were yesterday. Each day, which is always accompanied with God's new mercies, should have us reviewing our actions from yesterday. Each day should have us measuring our behavior against The Bible, our only written, infallible benchmark. Each day should have us improving the good and completely changing the bad. Each day should be embraced with this thought, "Lord, how can I be better today than I was yesterday?"
It is this mentality that marks the true Christian. It is this approach that yields growth, on a daily and consistent basis. This mindset prohibits complacency and shuns idleness. This way of thinking transforms Bible study into practical living - changing the "hearers" of The Word into "doers" of The Word. This practice differentiates the babes in Christ from those who have matured through grace.
I echo the admonishment of Peter to "grow in grace". Let us use God's grace for today to change the conversations we should not have had on yesterday. Let us use God's grace for today to resists the negative thoughts that plagued our minds on yesterday. Let us use God's grace for today to be a more productive employee. Let us use God's grace for today to be a friendlier neighbor. Let us use God's grace for today to do a better job at showing our loved ones how much we love them. In fact, let us use God's grace for today to improve the quality of time we spend with God. Let us maximize the use of God's grace for today, to be better than we were on yesterday.
"Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted. Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth. Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled. Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God. Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God." - Matthew 5:3-9
